The Storm Before The Calm

People come to me looking to fix what’s been broken.  They want me to lead them through the anger, the frustration and the dysfunctional communication to relieve them of their pain. I do my best to show them how to shift negative communication patterns.  How to deal with people that are being turds.  How to stop letting someone else have control, have power and to just stop letting others suck all of their energy away.

But I have to warn them – it might get worse before it gets better.  People hold tight to the familiar, even when the familiar is painful and awful and uncomfortable.  How many times have you found your kids wearing too small underwear, too tight jeans or a shoe they outgrew?  It feels right because it feels familiar.

So, yes, things might get worse before they get better.  It’s dark and cold and damp right before the sun starts to rise.  Believe that when it gets worse, it’s a sign that things are about to get better.  Hold onto that knowing.  When you find yourself in the cold and dark, hold on, the sun is on the way.  Burrow back under the covers, hold faith that the sun is on the way, prepare yourself for another day.
